Veterans Day
Veterans Day was first
celebrated November 11, 1919 but was called “Armistice Day”. It was honoring
the end of World War 1. This was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th
month of 1918. All business was suspended for 2 min starting at 11 am and
parades and public gathering were held. Later America began honoring unknown
soldiers. It was not until 1954 that the name was changed to Veterans Day. For 7
years Veterans Day was celebrated in October. In 1968 congress moved Veterans
Day to the 4th Monday in October so they could enjoy a long weekend.
But in 1975 president Gerald Ford changed it back to November 11. To keep the
historical meaning. The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day is
that Memorial Day celebrated in May, honors those who died in war while
Veterans Day honors all American Veterans.
